1. Restrict access to your flock: Limit who and what interacts with your chickens. This includes preventing contact with wild birds (who can carry diseases like avian influenza 🐦), stray animals, and even visitors’ shoes. Why: Wild birds and other animals are often carriers of diseases that can devastate a domestic flock. Preventing contact breaks the chain of transmission.

2. Dedicated footwear & cleaning/disinfection: Have a dedicated pair of boots or shoes only for use in the chicken area and disinfect them after each use. Regularly clean and disinfect feeders, waterers, and the coop itself. Use an appropriate disinfectant (e.g., diluted bleach solution, commercial poultry disinfectant). Why: Pathogens can be tracked into the chicken area on shoes, clothing, and equipment. Cleaning removes organic matter where pathogens thrive, and disinfection kills the pathogens, reducing the risk of infection.
